# Nihon Ken — The Show vs Working Divide

> Shigeru Kato's recurring argument that show-ring selection has hollowed out the Nihon Ken's working ability, especially in Shiba and Akita, and why hunting-first preservation is the only durable path.

The most persistent thread across Shigeru Kato's writing on `nihonken.co` is the tension between show-bred and working-bred Nihon Ken. His position is that show-ring selection has progressively hollowed out the working temperament and instincts that the breed standards were written to preserve — most visibly in the Shiba and Akita, where the drift is now generational, but with the same dynamic creeping into the medium breeds.

## The Mechanism

Show-ring selection rewards visual conformity — coat color, ear set, tail curl, movement in a flat ring. Working selection rewards what the dog actually does on the mountain — silent tracking, bay-and-hold under pressure, balanced kan-i and ryosei, willingness to close with dangerous game alone. These selection pressures don't reliably overlap. When the show ring becomes the primary selection venue, breeders accumulate dogs that LOOK like Nihon Ken but no longer reliably HUNT like them.

Shigeru's framing: you can't recover working ability from a show-bred line by training. The instincts (hot-nosed engagement, hoe-dome bark-and-hold, adaptive single-dog tactics, the right balance of nerve and self-preservation) are bred in or bred out across generations. Once gone, restoring them requires outcrossing back to working lines — which the show world generally resists.

## Where the Drift Is Most Visible

- **Shiba Inu** — the breed Shigeru returned to in his March 2026 "Shiba Inu Decline" post. The Shiba accounts for ~80% of NIPPO annual registrations, but the population is dominated by show- and pet-bred dogs. Working Shiba (small-game and bird hunters historically) are now rare.
- **Akita Inu** — even further along. The American Akita and Japanese Akita have already split into different breeds in everything but name. Both lines have been shaped predominantly by show-ring expectations for decades.
- **Kai Ken, Kishu Ken, Shikoku Ken, Hokkaido Ken** — the medium breeds are further along the show-divergence curve in some bloodlines than others. The breed-specific societies (Kai Ken Aigokai, Hokkaido Ken Hozonkai, etc.) push back harder on this than NIPPO does for these breeds. ## The "Holy Cow" Argument

Shigeru's October 2025 post "The Holy Cow of Breed Preservation" extends the argument: the closed-stud-book / pedigree-purity model of preservation, when combined with show-ring selection, actively damages the breeds it claims to protect. Pure pedigree without functional selection produces population-level inbreeding plus drift away from the original phenotype. The breeds' standards were originally functional descriptions, not pedigree certifications — and treating the pedigree as the sacred object inverts the priority.

## What Shigeru Argues For

- **Hunting-first selection** — breed for working ability, accept the visual variation that comes with it, and the soboku aesthetic emerges naturally.
- **Outcross within the breed when needed** — accept dogs from different lines, including working lines outside the dominant show lines, to maintain temperament breadth.
- **International placements with working homes** — preserve the working type by placing dogs where they'll actually be hunted, even when that means outside Japan. See `topics/nihon-ken-international-placements.md`.
- **Honesty about what's been lost** — be willing to say openly that a given line has lost its hunting ability, rather than pretending the show-bred version is interchangeable with the original.
