This breed was a cross between various mastiffs, bulldogs, and hounds, resulting in a powerful dog with a short, broad muzzle, pendulous lips, and a distinctive “rusty” coat with black markings. They were renowned for their strength, aggression, and exceptional tracking abilities.  

These dogs were primarily utilized by colonial authorities and slave owners to track, capture, and subdue runaway slaves. Trained to follow human scents relentlessly, Cuban Bloodhounds instilled fear among enslaved populations. Their use was not limited to Cuba; they were also employed in Jamaica, Haiti, and the southern United States. During the Second Seminole War in Florida (1835–1842), the U.S. Army imported Cuban Bloodhounds to track Seminole fighters and runaway slaves, though their effectiveness in swampy terrains was mixed.  

The Cuban Bloodhound's role in enforcing slavery left a lasting impact on cultural memory. Their presence was so dreaded that Harriet Tubman referenced them in songs warning of their approach. The breed's association with such brutal practices contributed to its eventual decline and extinction in the late 19th century.  

Today, the Cuban Bloodhound serves as a somber reminder of the lengths to which systems of oppression will go to maintain control. Their legacy underscores the importance of remembering and learning from the darker aspects of history.
