## South African Boerboel

The Boerboel is a powerful and protective breed from South Africa, originally developed to guard homesteads, livestock, and families. This breed combines strength, loyalty, and a calm demeanor, making it an excellent guardian and companion. Boerboels were bred by Dutch settlers in South Africa who needed a versatile and reliable dog to protect their farms from predators and intruders.

My Boerboel, Sabir, came from Tashi at Dichotomy Boerboel. Tashi's program emphasizes solid nerves and proper civil aggression, with dogs that are protection-tested. Sabir was about 4 years old and weighed 120 to 130 pounds. Tashi offered Sabir to me specifically because she knew I could handle his temperament — Sabir was handler-hard, which is rare for Boerboels (most are typically handler-soft). A true protective instinct cannot be trained; it is innate, and Sabir had it. I would not recommend a civil-aggressive Boerboel like Sabir to the average pet owner. Sabir exemplified the breed's natural protective instincts and deep bond with his owner. I describe Sabir as a classic "velcro dog" — he always wanted to be close to me and displayed stress when separated. This deep bond makes Boerboels exceptional personal protectors, but it also requires owners to be experienced and knowledgeable about handling strong, protective breeds.

My experience with Boerboels, particularly in rescue situations, highlights the importance of breeding for solid nerves and proper civil aggression. Hypervigilance is often mistaken for true protection, but it is actually fear-based — poorly bred Boerboels with hypervigilance resort to fear-based biting rather than displaying genuine protective instinct. I have encountered this problem repeatedly, emphasizing the need for careful selection from programs like Tashi's that breed for confident, stable nerves. I ensured that Sabir was well-socialized and trained, providing a balanced and confident demeanor.

Boerboels are known for their versatility and adaptability, thriving in various environments and climates. When properly socialized, they are excellent with children and other animals. My commitment to preserving the Boerboel includes promoting responsible breeding practices, educating potential owners about the breed's characteristics, and participating in breed-specific events to showcase the Boerboel's qualities.
