# Shiba Inu

> The smallest and most popular Nihon Ken. Brad's work with other Japanese breeds supports Shiba awareness.

## Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is the smallest and most famous Nihon Ken breed. Originating from central Japan, it was used to hunt small game and birds. The breed was declared a Living Natural Monument in the 1930s and is known for its agility, alertness, and independence.

The Shiba Inu's preservation has been driven by its popularity and adaptability as a family pet. My focus on other Japanese breeds has indirectly supported the Shiba Inu by raising awareness of the Nihon Ken.

## Shigeru's perspective

My partner Shigeru Kato wrote the Shiba Inu section of the 2012 PADS Journal article we co-authored (see `topics/nihon-ken-pads-article.md`), and he's returned to the Shiba in his March 2026 "Shiba Inu Decline" post on [nihonken.co](https://www.nihonken.co/). His argument: the Shiba accounts for ~80% of annual NIPPO registrations, but that volume is overwhelmingly pet- and show-bred dogs — the original small-game and bird hunting Shiba is now functionally extinct as a working population. The Shiba was the first Nihon Ken where show-ring selection ran far enough ahead of working selection that the working type couldn't be recovered without serious outcross work. He uses the Shiba's trajectory as the cautionary case for what happens to the medium breeds if the same selection drift continues. See `topics/nihon-ken-show-vs-working-divide.md`.
