# Gamper

> Armenian livestock guardian from the trans-Caucasian landrace. Siuran and Nora imported through Rohana.

## Gamper

The Gamper is an Armenian livestock guardian dog traditionally used to protect sheep from wolves. Armenia has a significant wolf population, and the Gamper, part of the trans-Caucasian landrace of livestock guardians, is crucial for protection. This group includes the Nogazi, various Turkish breeds, the Saravi dog from Iran, and dogs from Azerbaijan.

Before acquiring Gampers, I had Turkish dogs (Kangals), but they did not suit my needs. Kangals were overly friendly with strangers, which raised concerns about theft — a real issue when dogs are left with livestock in remote areas. Gampers could be sourced from small villages in Armenia, untouched by kennel clubs, preserving their working character. They exhibit more human suspicion than Kangals, which is important for preventing theft of both livestock and the dogs themselves.

I imported two females, Siuran and Nora, who were excellent livestock guardians. Siuran was a proficient coyote hunter, dispatching them quickly when they encroached on her territory. Nora was from western Armenia, near the Turkish border, with lineage tracing back to pre-Azerbaijan times. Nora came through contacts preserving the Gamper in America, specifically Rohana, who frequently travels to Armenia. Nora represented the trans-Caucasian LGD landrace well.

A notable physical trait of the Gamper is their large canine teeth, which are impressive even compared to other LGD breeds.

Gampers are not excessive barkers but are significant when they do bark. They are clean dogs and potty train quickly. I crate-train all my dogs, even working livestock guardians, to ensure they are comfortable in a crate if ever injured. Gampers thrive in cold winters and hot summers, reflecting their adaptability to Armenia's varied climate. As a working breed, they need mental challenges to prevent boredom, require a large fenced yard, and are unsuitable for apartment living.
