## Dogo Argentino

The Dogo Argentino is a hunting breed developed in Argentina specifically for hunting boar and puma. Two brothers created it based on the now-extinct fighting dog of Cordoba and added various other breeds to it. The exact mix of breeds is ambiguous, with debates over the inclusion of breeds like the Irish Wolfhound. Regardless, the Dogo was developed to be a larger dog than the Cordoba, adept at tracking and catching wild boar and fighting puma.

My approach to predator management is "hazing" — using dogs to bark and stress prey, making them fearful of dogs and humans. This technique is used for bear control in Yellowstone and Montana by Karelian Bear Dog handlers. Occasionally, a "dog-sour tom" — a cougar that has fought dogs before — would come out of a tree to fight rather than flee, requiring a cat-fighting dog. The Dogo Argentino has a history of being matched against pumas in Argentina (now illegal), making the breed well suited for this role.

I acquired my Dogo Argentino, Che, specifically for hunting mountain lions alongside my West Siberian Laika, Ike. My friend Foes and I tracked down a specific line in Argentina still being used for hunting puma. Che's mother, Puma, was imported pregnant from Argentina, and I picked Che from the litter at six weeks old. Che accompanied me on many hunts with Ike, although he never fought any cats, which I preferred. Eventually my life changed and I moved to Colorado, where the mountain lion population is less aggressive.

I also had a female Dogo named Mia. She was more aloof with strangers than Che but still friendly. The Dogo Argentino is an athletic breed with impressive endurance and sprinting speeds. They are versatile — capable of being both devoted family pets and serious working dogs for hog hunting and predator management. Despite their hunting prowess, I found the breed to have some health concerns, such as allergies to corn, deafness, and weak bladders. However, aside from these issues, Dogos make excellent family dogs.
